The Regulation (EC) obliges the vehicle manufacturers to install TPMS in basic models of cars.
26.07.2012
According to estimation of ADAC and TÜV Süd there are about 15 million cars and campers
with low tyre pressure on German roads. By Regulation (EC) No. 661/2009 since
November 1, 2012 all vehicle manufacturers are obliged to equip a basic model of M1
motor vehicles (cars and campers) with TPMS (Tyre-Pressure Monitoring System).
In the EU judgement the road safety will increase, as the tyre damage may be revealed
prior to its failure. In addition, optimally inflated tyres reduce the consumption of fuel and
thus also CO2 emissions. Tyre-pressure monitoring systems are offered as direct
or indirect systems. Direct systems collect exact data on pressure through sensors installed
in the tyre valve and they are reported through radio signals almost in real time.
Indirect systems use the ABS system for pressure monitoring where they register a loss
of air pressure with the help of higher angular velocity.
Hans-Jürgen Drechsler, Bundesverband Reifenhandel und Vulkaniseur-Handwerk BRV
Manager thinks that following the current state of technical development only direct TPMS
may comply with the criteria set for EU.  “We expect that in the period November 2012 to
November 2014 and even later Germany will be confronted with Renaissance of direct
TPMS also in the field of spare tyres in cars.“
